Un- finished

brash leather
tonal study

This piece was a homework task of tonal study. It depicts a bit, leather shoe and lighter, although the belt and half the shoe are the only things distinguishable
this tool be about 2 and a half hours to draw and i decided i really liked the unfinished look (it was also 1am). i plan to pursue this type of drawing, i find it both challenging and interested. tone depth and shadow are so much fun to attempt to communicate.

Hatching fruit

hatched fruit
hatching practice on red paper

This was a spice we did in the studio a while ago, last term. i really love the aesthetics of the hatching. i love to hatch in life drawing as well
This piece was one of three work we ddi on separate pieces of paper, one red, one brown. this red one was my favourite.

Recreating the masteripieces

This was some work we did in class after we had completed all our acrylic colour theory. This is a little practice painting each of the members of my class did. Its a Matisse painting of his wife im pretty sure. We painted this one for practice because it has an odd use of warm and cool colours that initially threw some class members off. this i didn't like so much. i just found it frustrating, especially the eyes

The last of the life drawing session

I also have a life drawing class which i love. i find life drawing to be more structured and like progressively building a drawing. i often draw the images i see in my head, so i like the challenge of life drawing.

This was the last pose of the lesson, i really enjoyed this even though i thought i got a tough angle on the model. I found creating the depth in the folds of clothing on the back very challenging but i think i got what i wanted in the last 5 min of the pose.

Life drawing class, Bones and such

For a homework task we were asked to do some tracings on the skeletal structure of both hands and feet. this was really intricate and interesting. i really love to do these tracing in class. My tutor Sonya says it gives you an idea of the kind of strokes and speeds these artist work at (we tend to trace the work of renowned artists like Leonardo da Vinci). i enjoyed this even though i don't love it when the ink drips from the nib i use. My teacher likes to see them, makes it more authentic i assume

creating the endless colour charts

Colour theory can be tiresome. endless painting of squares, mixing colour, the smallest brush hair of colour can make some of the biggest differences. throughout the term we've mixed so many different types of colour. One of the biggest things Ive learnt is the differences in temperature when mixing different black. (never though i could make a warm black).

this is just one of the photo. in this chart we see the transition of secondary colours to primary colours in different stages, as well as different tones for each level of blended colours.

Ive learnt heaps from colour theory. i have found interesting, very challenging and exhausting. I do like it a lot, but maybe in my free time ill stick to little black and white drawings.

here a little snapshot of the progress:

Christmas in the studio

This will be my first proper post.
My name is Keaton reid, attending c3 college and studying visual arts alongside christian theology and ministry/ leadership classes.
I've already been through one term and its been amazing.
This blog is for assessments, but i plan to continue to use it, to put the progress, the practice, the mistakes and the masterpieces

At the beginning of this second term we as a class started painting and colour theory. all given a brand new kit. Brushes, a palette knife, palettes, and an array of acrylic tubes of paint. i have only painted small things before, for fun, for experimenting. A few years ago i had done part of a colour theory class at COFA in the city. The colour theory that we've already gone through has been amazing and so different to previous class work I've done before. I think i will continue to love colour theory.

here is the kit:
